How it works
How to turn a video into a GIF
01
Add a clip
Drop an MP4, WebM or MOV, or start from the sample. It is read in this tab and never uploaded.
02
Trim and size it
Set where it starts and how long it runs (up to 15 seconds), the width, frames per second and playback speed.
03
Make and download
One palette is built from frames across the whole clip, so colors stay steady. Preview the GIF, check its size, then download it.
How to keep a GIF small
A GIF stores every frame as up to 256 colors, so its size grows with width × height × frames. Halving the width cuts the file to about a quarter; going from 20 to 10 frames per second halves it. For a README or a docs page, 480 pixels wide at 12 to 15 fps is usually plenty.
Shorter is better than smaller. Trim to the one action that matters (a click and its result, a chart filling in) instead of shrinking a long clip until it blurs. GitHub takes GIFs up to 10 MB in issues, pull requests and comments, and a smaller file starts playing sooner everywhere else.
Flat interfaces and logos compress far better than footage. If your clip is mostly a camera shot, try 128 colors with dither on, or send an MP4 where the place you post accepts one.
What dither does to a GIF
With only 256 colors to work with, a smooth gradient turns into visible bands. Dither scatters the leftover error as a fine, regular pattern, so the eye blends neighbouring colors back into a smooth ramp. This tool uses an ordered (Bayer) dither, which stays in the same place from frame to frame, so it does not shimmer the way random noise would.
Turn it off for flat UI recordings with solid fills: they have few colors to begin with, and the file comes out smaller without the pattern.

FAQ
Questions
Still stuck? The guides cover installing, agents and licensing in more detail.
Read the guidesIs my video uploaded anywhere?
No. The clip is decoded by your browser, drawn frame by frame onto a canvas and encoded into a GIF in this tab. Nothing is sent to a server, so private screen recordings stay private.
How long can the GIF be?
Up to 15 seconds per GIF, so a phone does not run out of memory. For anything longer, a GIF is the wrong format: an MP4 is a tenth of the size at better quality.
Can I convert a MOV from my iPhone or a QuickTime screen recording?
Yes, in Safari and in Chrome on a Mac. Some browsers on Windows cannot decode HEVC MOV files; if yours shows a black preview, export the clip as MP4 (H.264) first.
Why does my GIF look grainy or banded?
GIF allows 256 colors per frame. Banding means dither is off; graininess means dither is on over a busy shot. Try the other setting, raise the colors to 256, or lower the width so each frame needs fewer distinct shades.
Is there a watermark or a limit?
No watermark, no sign-up and no daily limit. Make as many GIFs as you like and use them anywhere.
