What is a SKILL.md skill?
One open format
A skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file inside: a name, a description and instructions, plus any scripts or templates. The format is open, so one folder can serve any agent that reads it.
Copied where your agent looks
Agents keep skills in different places. 17 of the agents below list ~/.agents/skills/. Others have a folder of their own, and work agents take an upload in the app.
Loaded when it is needed
An agent reads only each skill’s name and description at first, and opens the full instructions when a task matches. Long skills cost almost nothing until they are used.
The format is written down at agentskills.io.
Questions about agents and skills
What is a SKILL.md skill?
A folder with a SKILL.md file in it. The file starts with a name and a description, then holds the instructions. Scripts, templates and other files can sit beside it. The format is open and written down at agentskills.io, and Lookbook skills follow it.
Which agents read SKILL.md skills?
The 31 on this page. An agent is listed only when its maker’s own docs say it reads skills and where they go, and each agent’s page links to the docs it came from.
Where do the skills go?
It depends on the agent. 17 list ~/.agents/skills/, Claude Code reads ~/.claude/skills, and others have a folder of their own, such as ~/.trae/skills. Work agents take an upload through a menu instead. The table above shows each one.
What is the difference between a coding agent and a work agent?
A coding agent is a terminal or editor tool that reads skill folders on your machine. A work agent is an app you upload a skill into: Claude Cowork, Manus, Perplexity Computer, WorkBuddy, Coze here. Both read the same SKILL.md folder, but a work agent takes it as a ZIP.
Have Lookbook’s skills been tested in all of them?
No. Lookbook has not recorded a run in any of them. Every skill is written for 6 agents: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, OpenCode. The others read the same SKILL.md folders according to their docs. What Lookbook checks is that each skill’s own build and render commands pass before it ships.
My agent is not here. Does it not support skills?
Not necessarily. It may support them without saying where they go, which is the only way an agent gets listed here. Check its own docs, and look back as agents add them.
